HISTORY OF HAVANESE

The Havanese is a dog breed of the Bichon type, developed from the now extinct Blanquito de la Habana ("little white dog of Havana"). It is believed that the Blanquito was eventually cross-bred with other Bichon types, to create what is now known as the Havanese. They are sometimes referred to as "Havana Silk Dogs," though this was originally just another name for the Blanquito de la Habana. The Havanese is the National dog of Cuba.

The French word Bichon means "fleecy dog" and is believed to be a contraction of the word Barbichon which in French means "bearded". Over time, the term has become synonymous of a dog completely covered of hair and the breed has a very nice personality and people-oriented.

It is believed that the ancestors of the Havanese came to Cuba in the colonial era with the expeditions from Europe to the New World. Over time and due to different living conditions, these races were transformed. Then came a different kind of dogs, smaller size, long hair, silky, the BLANQUITO DE LA HABANA, because the colour of this dog was all white.

With a lot of crossings, White colour acquired Havana color and size increases, but does not lose its wonderful character. The Havanese was carrying the best traits of their parents, kept the character alive, happy and intelligent, and the breed acquires strength and size.
The Havanese adorned the homes of Cuban aristocracy during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The character of the Havanese, so easy of training, extraordinary intelligence and beauty of his coat contributed to the continuing popularity of the breed as a family companion. In Cuba, they became very popular, not only as elite pets.
By the twentieth century, due to the different changes that were occurring, the Havanese was removed from the mansion, but was quickly accepted more modest homes. The breeding of this breed suffered a blow to the revolution in 1959, not in accordance with the popular principles of the new changes.

Over time the race was reduced in number to the point that almost became extinct, not only in Europe but also in his native Cuba. They managed to get eleven dogs from three Cuban families to leave the island to the U.S. fleeing the revolution. At that point, start the rebirth of the race. Most of today is descended from these havanese dogs.

The Havanese dog is also known as Havana Silk Dog.
