HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF COTON DE TULEAR
The two most important characteristics of the coton de tulear breed are the type of coat, with COTTON texture ( cottony, white and long hair ) and its lovely character, its biggest virtue. This unknown breed is the perfect friend!
The Coton de Tuléar is a small size breed. It is named for the city of Tuléar in Madagascar and for its cotton-like coat.
The history of this race is exotic as Madagascar island, where the coton de tulear is native. The name of the breed comes from the French word "coton" meaning cotton, and the port of Tulear in Madagascar. Tulear was a popular port of merchant ships sailing the Indian Ocean and is believed to be around the XV-XVI centuries, European merchants introduced to Madagascar several companion dogs.
According to legend, some of these adventurers, with their dogs swim to Reunion Island, were born the Coton of Reunion, an extint breed, but their descendants in Madagascar were developed through a breeding program. These dog pioneers, mingled with the local dogs, and with this union born a new race, which was marked by the cottony textured hair from which its name.
This produced the now known as Coton de Tulear in the city of Tulear in Madagascar. The small Coton became known as the Royal dog of Madagascar because it was the favorite of the French nobility who lived in the islands during the colonial era. Their beauty and the affectionate personality, these dogs were offered to the King and nobles. In the seventeenth century, the Coton de Tulear was adopted by the tribal monarchy "Merina" and only the Aristocracy could have one coton. This gave him the title of "The Royal Dog of Madagascar." Before the 21th Century was an offense had one coton if you are not member of Top Society in Madagascar. It is likely that the race has evolved from crosses between Bichons and other breeds.
The Coton de Tulear was recognized under the standard n º 283, in group 9, Companion Dogs. It is now a rare breed, but the breed is increasing its popularity in all countries worldwide, with reputable breeders.

This breed is like a coton ball but they have strong health with a long life expectancy ( around 15-18 years old )
The breed is very intelligent and they live happily in all life-styles.

All our dogs are tested by an official veterinary of eyes, heart and elbows and knees, and testicles ( males ).
GROOMING OF THE COTON DE TULEAR
The grooming of the coton de tulear is different if you have one show dog coton ( with long hair ) or one pet coton ( with puppy cut ).
The coat needs to be combed at least twice per week. You can use special combs or brush for this type of hair. You are welcome to ask me for advices to keep perfectly to coton de tulear dog or puppy.
This breed is hypoallergenic.
